Why Lifestyle Still Matters - Even If You’re on Statins
When it comes to lowering cholesterol, few treatments are as widely used as statins. They’re one of the most commonly prescribed medications in the world, and for many people, they’re absolutely life-saving.
But here’s something important to understand: while statins are powerful, they’re not the whole story. Lifestyle changes still matter, whether you’re already taking medication, might need it in the future, or are working to avoid it altogether.
What Do Statins Do?
Statins work by blocking an enzyme in the liver that your body needs to make cholesterol. The result is lower levels of LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, which reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke.
For many people, statins are a vital part of treatment. And to be clear - I am not anti-statins. This blog, and my coaching programme, isn’t about avoiding medication at all costs. It’s about giving you the tools to support your medication with lifestyle changes that improve your health even further.
The Limits of Statins
Statins lower cholesterol, but they don’t:
Improve your diet
Move your body
Help you sleep
Manage your stress
Increase your fitness
All of these factors play a huge role in your long-term health and quality of life. That’s why medication + lifestyle is the winning combination. It’s not either/or, it’s both/and.
Familial Hypercholesterolaemia (FH): When Genes Are Involved
Another important topic is familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH), a genetic condition where people are born with very high cholesterol levels. It affects around 1 in 250 people, but many don’t know they have it.
If you have:
Very high cholesterol from a young age
A strong family history of high cholesterol
A history of early heart disease in the family
…it’s worth speaking to your doctor about FH testing.
For people with FH, medication like statins is almost always required, because lifestyle changes alone can’t reduce cholesterol to safe levels. But that doesn’t mean lifestyle isn’t important. Eating a heart-healthy diet, staying active, avoiding smoking, and managing stress all add up to better outcomes and reduced risk.
Key Takeaway
Whether you’re on statins, considering them, or managing cholesterol without medication, lifestyle still matters. Medication lowers cholesterol, but it can’t replace the impact of:
Nutritious, heart-healthy foods
Regular movement
Good-quality sleep
Stress management
Avoiding smoking
👉 Your action step today: if you’re on statins, choose one lifestyle habit to focus on this week that complements your medication. If you’re not on medication, keep building small changes that protect your future health.
