Have you ever caught yourself saying…

“I’ve ruined it now. I’ll start again on Monday. Why can’t I just stick to it like everyone else?”

If so, you're not alone and you’re not the problem. You’ve just been taught the wrong approach.

In this post, I want to unpack one of the most common patterns I see as a health coach and how one client’s story (which reflects so many others) shows us what real progress actually looks like.

Because it turns out… it’s not about being perfect. It’s about finally feeling free.

The All-or-Nothing Cycle So Many People Get Stuck In

Let’s start with a scenario that might feel painfully familiar.

You start strong on Monday, your meals are prepped, your intentions are good, your motivation is high.

Then life happens. You get tired. You order the takeaway. You skip the workout. You have a drink or dessert you didn’t plan for.

And the spiral begins:

"I’ve blown it now. What’s the point? I’ll just start again next week -properly this time.”

This is the all-or-nothing mindset in action. And it’s exhausting.

Why This Isn’t About Willpower

The truth is, this pattern has nothing to do with how disciplined or motivated you are.

It’s not that you can’t stick to things, it’s that the things you’re trying to stick to were never sustainable in the first place.

And every time you "fail" to follow a rigid plan that was never built to flex around real life, it quietly chips away at your confidence.

You start to believe the problem is you.

"Why can other people be consistent, but I can’t? Am I just not someone who can do this?"

But the problem isn’t you, it’s the plan. And more importantly, it’s the mindset behind the plan.

When Diets Damage Your Self-Esteem

One client (we’ll call her Sarah) said something to me recently that perfectly captured this.

She told me she spent years bouncing between diets, always starting with the best of intentions, always blaming herself when she couldn’t stick to them.

And over time, she didn’t just lose motivation, she lost belief in herself.

That’s the real cost of yo-yo dieting. It’s not just weight fluctuations, it’s the hit to your self-efficacy.

You stop trusting yourself. You stop trying new things. You stop believing that change is possible.

Because how can you believe in a future you’ve never seen work before?

Health Is Not an On/Off Switch - It’s a Dial

One of the most powerful mindset shifts we worked on together was this:

You’re not “on plan” or “off plan”. Health isn’t an all-or-nothing game. It’s a dial, and you get to turn it up or down depending on what life looks like.

When she got ill recently, Sarah rested. She didn’t force herself through workouts. She had a shop-bought pizza because cooking wasn’t realistic that night.

And instead of spiralling like she would have done in the past, she just carried on.

No guilt. No punishment. No “starting again” - because she never stopped.

And the next week, when she was feeling better, she eased right back into her usual rhythm.

“It’s one less thing to beat myself up about,” she said.

And that, in my opinion, is the kind of progress that truly matters.

What Real Progress Looks Like

As a society we seem to love before-and-after photos and big milestone moments. But often, the most meaningful wins are the quiet ones:

  • Eating the pizza and not feeling guilty.

  • Missing the gym and not panicking.

  • Getting back into routine without needing to “restart.”

  • Choosing self-compassion instead of shame.

  • Learning how to trust yourself again.

That’s not falling off track. That is the track.

And when you start living this way - when you realise you don’t have to earn your rest or make up for every indulgence - you create a version of health that’s actually enjoyable and sustainable.

Imagine Feeling Like This

Imagine not spiralling when life happens. Imagine not writing off entire weekends. Imagine being proud of your progress - not exhausted by it.

It’s not just possible. It’s closer than you think.

And it starts with changing your approach, not yourself.

Final Thoughts

If you’re stuck in the cycle of starting over… If you’ve been chasing “perfect” and feeling like you keep falling short… And if you’re ready to feel calm, in control, and consistent even when life is messy…

I’d love to help you get there.

You don’t need more willpower. You just need the right support, the right mindset, and a little permission to do things differently.
