At this time of year, you’re probably seeing and hearing a lot of “new year, new you” messaging.


New habits.

New body.

New rules.

A complete reset.


For many people, that messaging feels motivating for about a week - and then quietly crushing.


Because real life doesn’t pause in January. Work is still busy (if not more so!). Family responsibilities don’t disappear. Energy levels might be low. Motivation comes and goes.


So what if you didn’t need to become a whole new person to feel better about your health?


What if you didn’t need a dramatic overhaul at all - just a place to start and then build from?


That’s what I want to gently explore here.


Before we talk about goals, plans or resolutions, I’d invite you to pause and ask yourself one simple question: What would your future self thank you for starting today?


Your cholesterol isn’t just a number


If you’ve been told your cholesterol is high, it’s completely normal to feel unsure where to begin.


Maybe you’ve tried making changes before.

Maybe you’ve been advised to “eat better and move more” - but without much clarity on what that actually means day to day.

Maybe you’re doing “most things right” already and feel frustrated that your numbers are still raised.


Cholesterol isn’t just a blood test result. It’s part of a longer-term picture of heart health, metabolism and lifestyle.


Left unaddressed, raised cholesterol increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, including heart attacks and strokes. But it’s important to say this clearly and calmly: Cholesterol doesn’t suddenly cause problems overnight.


It’s the accumulation of patterns over time that matters - and that’s exactly why small, consistent changes can be so powerful.


You don’t need perfection. You need direction.


Why change feels hard (even when you know it matters)


One of the biggest barriers I see isn’t lack of knowledge - it’s overwhelm.


People often feel stuck between:

  • knowing they should do something

  • but not knowing where to focus first

  • and feeling that if they can’t do it “properly”, it’s not worth starting


This all-or-nothing thinking is incredibly common, especially when it comes to health.


You might recognise it:

  • “I’ll start when I have more time.”

  • “I’ll do it properly after this busy period.”

  • “There’s no point starting now if I can’t keep it up.”


The truth is, there’s rarely a perfect time.


But there are realistic steps you can take right now that your future self will genuinely benefit from.


Small changes really do add up


When it comes to cholesterol, progress doesn’t come from extreme diets or drastic rules.


It comes from:

  • eating patterns you can repeat

  • movement you don’t dread

  • routines that fit into your actual life


Here are a few gentle starting points that often make a meaningful difference over time:


1. Focus on what you can add, not just remove

Adding more fibre-rich foods (like vegetables, oats, beans and whole grains) helps reduce LDL cholesterol naturally. This doesn’t mean banning foods - it means nudging the balance in a heart-healthier direction.


2. Move in a way that feels doable

Exercise doesn’t need to be intense to be effective. Regular walking, light strength work or movement you enjoy can improve cholesterol, blood pressure and insulin sensitivity - all important for heart health.


3. Don’t underestimate sleep and stress

Poor sleep and chronic stress quietly sabotage health. They affect appetite, motivation, blood sugar control and inflammation - all of which influence cholesterol levels. Supporting rest and recovery is not “lazy”; it’s protective.


4. Build consistency, not intensity

A habit you do at 70% effort most days is far more powerful than a “perfect” plan you abandon after two weeks.

  • When was the last time you felt more energised, calm or confident about your health? What were you doing differently - even subtly?

  • Choose one habit to focus on this week.That might be:

    • cooking one more meal at home

    • going for a 20-minute walk

    • sitting down for a proper lunch

    • swapping one snack for something more filling

  • Remind yourself: this is not the end goal. It’s the first brick.


Momentum comes from repetition, not pressure.
